The Cloth

Sigrun from behind, kneeling, drawing a red thread up with a bone needle

Nine families live in the valley of Hrafnvik. For three generations they have owed each other blood.

Last winter the valley judge ruled on it. The feud ends after seven nights of belt wrestling, once someone stitches every night into the Great Cloth. Leave one night out and the feud wakes again.

Sigrun Hallsdottir embroiders for a living. Twenty years ago she wrestled, and she was good. The judge gave her the needle and the belt, both.

She took them for Eirik. Her brother went down in a bout last spring and never walked straight again.

Eirik Hallsson, thin, leaning his weight on a staff with a folded belt in his hand

Eirik Hallsson

Twenty-six. He still carries the belt he fell in.

Sigrun's scarred hand pulling a red thread through linen, half stitched and half charcoal

The scar across her palm came from a needle.

Below her hand the cloth is still charcoal: a sketch of seven nights that have not happened yet. Each morning she sews the night before. The judge lets nobody else touch the frame.

The second length of linen

Seven Nights

One bout a night. Each family picks who stands for it, and the judge picks the ground.

  1. Night oneAshfloor Hall. Tormund Aske.
  2. Night twoAshfloor Hall. Orm Kettilsson.
  3. Night threeShingle Mouth. Gudrun Ravnsdottir.
  4. Night fourShingle Mouth. Ulf the net-mender.
  5. Night fiveBrand Yard. Hild Brandsdottir.
  6. Night sixBrand Yard. Ketil Brandsson.
  7. Night sevenKept for the last length.

Night oneAshfloor Hall

Tormund Aske is sixty-seven and the heaviest man in the valley. His grandfather spoke the first insult in this hall. Tormund wants the feud shut while an Aske is still standing in it.

He lets Sigrun take his belt and leans on her, all of him. She stays under him until his knees tire, then turns her hip. It takes two throws.

She stitches it the next morning. A red figure, a grey one, a belt between them.

A tight red knot puckering the stitches around it

The thread

Night four, on the stones of Shingle Mouth. Ulf the net-mender drops her flat on her back.

That night Sigrun picks out the stitches where she fell and sews the moment again. In the morning the whole beach remembers her standing. Ulf remembers it too. Her left hand will not close all the way.

The thread changed the cloth and what the valley remembers. It did nothing for her hand.

The rule of the cloth Every exchange you win adds one stitch. Once a round you may Pull the Thread: the last exchange comes undone and you wrestle it again from the same grip. The pulled thread leaves a knot, and the knot holds one of your moves for the rest of the round.
Brand Yard stitched in wool: turf roofs, a hay rick, goats at the fence of a trampled yard
Hild Brandsdottir springing low, one hand near the ground

Hild Brandsdottir
Nineteen. Too low and too quick to hold.

Night fiveBrand Yard

The Brand farm is all the Brands have left, and Hild is all the Brands can send. She cut her hair with sheep shears that morning so nobody could take a fistful of it.

She gets under Sigrun three times. On the third, Sigrun is already falling when she reaches for the thread.

The knot costs her the inside trip for the rest of the round. She wins with her hip.

Pull the Thread

Night one, first round. Take Tormund's belt and throw him. When he has you in the air, pull the thread once.

Sigrun and Tormund locked in a clinch.

Same grip, again. The Hip Turn throws him, and the night is stitched.

The Last Stitch

The seventh night is Tormund again. No other Aske would stand up.

He is slower now, and so is she. Her left hand has not closed since the beach. She throws him once in front of all nine families, and he stays down.

Then she sits at the frame. By now she knows what the needle does. Eirik's night is in the cloth too, a year back and still charcoal. She could sew her brother standing.

The Great Cloth on its pole: six stitched nights and one panel near the bottom left bare, a needle still in it

She sits until the hearth goes grey. Then she cuts the thread and leaves the last length bare.

The cloth hangs in Ashfloor Hall, unfinished.Nobody has dared to take it down.

From the Loom. 27 October 2026

The first length is on the frame

Today we hung the first length of STITCHHOLD where you can see it: Sigrun, Tormund, and the first night in Ashfloor Hall. Pull the Thread on this page is the opening round of that night, cut down to one exchange.

We show the game the way Sigrun works the cloth: one length at a time, hung when we finish sewing it. Brand Yard and Hild Brandsdottir are next on the frame.

Help

When can I play?

The game is in early reveal. Followers hear first when there is something to play.

PC and Xbox Series X|S at launch.

Is it only story?

No. The seven nights are the story mode. You can also wrestle any ground against a friend on one machine or online.

How does Pull the Thread work?

Once a round you may undo your last exchange and wrestle it again from the same grip. The knot it leaves locks one of your moves until the round ends.
